Since I first started to use the cash envelope system around a year ago, I have become a HUGE fan of this method.  It really works for us and although it's nothing new, I know there are a lot of questions about how to set one up and how to use the system.

Whilst I'm by no means an expert on the subject (let's face it - if I was I wouldn't be in debt!) I'm sharing how the cash envelope system helps us to control our spending in the areas where we use cash.

At the start of October I filled up our cash envelopes for the first half of the month, which you can see here:

Using real life, actual cash has really helped us to think about our expenditures before handing over our hard earned dosh.  That physical feeling of holding REAL money in your hands makes it feel much more like actual money, in a way that a plastic debit card just can't.

So let me know, have you tried the cash envelope method for budgeting?  Did it work for you?

  1. I used to use envelopes for budgeting, these days it's more of a virtual envelope system. Our grocery, household and personal spending money go into a separate account so we know we can't overspend in those areas.
